Experimental light painting
After the birthday experimental shoot I went back over the pictures and decided to play around with the edits with no exact idea in mind and just letting my creativity flow.
I like the effect of black and white images because they instantly look more sinister. The ghost like shadow of a figure is distinguishable but lost in the movement of the moment. The two lines curving were made with a torch but I like how they blend into the image and aren't necessarily instantly recognisable as light.
I am in love with these colours. The balloons created such a vibrant wash of colour across the photo and the silhouette of the figure just distinguishable contrasts well with the flow of colour.
This is actually two photos superimposed while playing with photoshop. These photos were taken in the dark alleyway behind my house but the location is completely lost in some of these edits. It is as if I am creating a digital drawing using physical techniques and I attempted to draw the biggest pair of boobs I could. This was absolutely not recognisable in the final creations but the big swirling lines were striking none the less.
This one is just really cool. I love the edited colour palette. I was attempting to create a coil gradually getting further and further away from the camera but this outcome reminds me of a fascinator one would wear to a wedding.
This was the first attempt at incorporating the background into the overall composition as well as a figure and a light drawing. In the editing process I played with the colours to make them pop and give a painterly effect to the piece. The cobbled path reflected the light really beautifully and even the trees on the right help frame the angel in the centre. There is a peaceful feeling to this image but the reality was quite a frantic process to get all the lines drawn in the short timeframe of the camera shutter.
From there I started pushing my edits even further and combined some more together to create these next pieces. These ephemeral drawings capture the energy that graffiti projects and I could see this on a wall as a powerful piece of work. In my first try I boosted the vibrancy and saturation of the colours to create a feeling that the angel and the colours surrounding her were all on the same depth. In the second try however I experimented with making the angel appear brighter and therefore in the foreground with colourful extensions to her wings in the background. I really like both and would like to get these professionally printed when we have access to the printers again.
This final composition was really eye opening to me. I kept hearing Steve Oliver's voice in my head telling me to keep pushing whatever I felt was already completed which led me to layer multiple images on top of each other without knowing what the outcome would look like. When I paused to look at the finished creation I connected with it the idea that I wanted to make big colourful movements but that I felt restricted. The clean and crisp spiral of white looks as if it if tying all the coloured mishmash of free expression and constricting it. This directly correlates to how I feel about myself and I am slowly beginning to accept who I actually am even if I am not ready to discuss it on the internet yet. The rainbow colour palette and the fear that is rooted deep inside of me about its connotations is starting to manifest as I listen to it and let it guide me in my actions. I can't ignore it and deny it anymore.
After discussing this project with Rhiana she sent me a link to an artist I could look at who also does long exposure photography. I will continue to push this idea in the next semester so will look into her to see what more I can learn.
