Social Media Research

According to Paul Weiner in "Navigating the art world Professional practice for the early career artist" (2020, p29) the emerging art audience is changing. He conducted a poll on his Instagram account asking what the art world looks like today for emerging artists online, with about 400 respondents for each question. He stated "Polling for this piece revealed 94% of the audience wanted to see real exhibitions by the artists who they follow online, 79% see more art online than in person, and 57% think the art they find online is as important as what they see in person. With this online audience growing rapidly, massive image-quality improvements on the horizon, and a digital-native generation coming of age, a significant shift is in progress towards accepting the virtual as real." Programme Day feedback and reflection

I did an artist talk about my line dance drawing journey yesterday and I was really proud of the work I put into this presentation. I did my absolute best and only stuttered a couple times so I am counting it as a big win. Sharing my work on social media and receiving so many encouraging words and inspirational ideas from so many people has made me feel more connected than ever so I shared this presentation on all my platforms for those that would like to read more about it. I have lots of big things in planning at the moment including investing in a 3.55m wide roll of paper that will allow me to experiment with creating huge monotypes of the dances, doing a full charcoal drawing and performance of the routine on top of it, creating videos of the drawings and dances to illustrate the process better, trialling paint pouring with long tubes attached to my feet while I hold bottles of paint, experimenting with vinyl as a surface to make marks on... This development in my practice is leading me down an exciting new path of creativity that embraces who I am and what brings me joy. I am a dancer and I have been dancing my whole life. I have done everything from ballet to ballroom and before the pandemic hit, I would be going to weekly modern jive classes and multiple dance festivals every year. Growing up I remember going to lots of folk-dance festivals and sitting on the edge of the dancefloors my parents would want to dance in, watching the classes and learning the moves by mimicking my legs with my hands from pure boredom. This technique of learning came with a big bonus for a lazy pre-teen because it meant I could learn most of the dances without even having to get up. Once I had understood the movements with my hands, I could do the routine on my feet, without having to stand around during a class learning the dance at a slow pace. Rethink. Refund. Reboot. exhibition piece and statement

Time-lapses of me creating the NON ESSENTIAL clown look on my face:  https://youtu.be/PRrkiDUsLp0 Second attempt:  https://youtu.be/ofEzy0CN_J0 These are the two time-lapses I ended up creating because after I had completed the first one on Saturday 20/03 and did the photoshoot on my own in my room I discovered that all the photos were blurry and I needed to redo it all. So on Sunday 21/03 I did the entire face paint again and this time I learnt from some mistakes I had made the day before so it wasn't all bad that I had to redo it all. I paid more attention to detail and only used body paint when creating the second look rather than using Acrylic paint for the white because when it had dried it was cracking and pulling on my skin. I also got my housemate to take the photos for me to focus the camera correctly. Overall I am glad I took the time to do it all again because the quality of the photos from the second shoot was miles better than the first shoot and this was import...

Planning and making the "Non-Essential" piece

For the face paint component of the Apparently, I'm not essential piece, I researched the meanings behind the clown symbol and collected some information. To embrace the clown character you have to work with the face that's looking back at you in the mirror. I wanted to play a fool because I feel like a fool studying art and paying all this money only to be told to retrain by the government.   The following definition  of the clown symbol  ( Kaleidoscope effect, 2021)  captured the essence of why I thought the clown would be and appropriate representation of my sentiment: "The clown is a dual symbol. On the one hand, he reminds that you need to laugh and not take all things very seriously, on the other – the clown is an ominous character.
