First painting on canvas ever

This was an external project that I made as a birthday present for my best friend. Although it wasn't in line with my project direction I have been wanting to experiment with painting onto a canvas so I obviously had to make a composition of three canvases because go big or go home right?

I had to teach myself how to render our faces into the Rick and Morty style while maintaining the likeness of our features. This project also got me through a tough period during the holidays where my mental health was at an all time low so I am proud of the rigour with which I planned and prepped this piece. After playing with the composition using sketchbook pages first I decided to test out the colours using my pro markers before I would apply the paint to the canvas. I managed to massively oversaturate the boy's skin tone with orange but I learnt from that mistake and absolutely nailed the skin tones on the final piece. After priming the canvases with watered down acrylic paint I transferred the designs and got to work building the colours up from the background up. I finished off the piece with a permanent marker to outline the drawing.

Overall I was really pleased with this piece and my best friend loved it! I kept posting updates of my progress onto my instagram page which kept me accountable to finish it while also letting me bounce ideas off my followers by asking questions about what I should do on my stories. Whether or not I will do another project like this is debatable because it was so pernickety but I may explore painting on a larger canvas because I do like the finish that the medium adds to the piece.

Here are a couple of timelapses that I put onto my instagram to keep people engaged with my project.
