Light painting experiments

In the summer I was inspired by some of Francesca Woodman's long exposure photography and the ghostly effects that she had created in her work. Barbara Morgan did long exposure light painting as a way to expand on her passion of photographing dancers in movement. By combining the two I achieved some interesting results.

Francesca Woodman (1958-1981)

Barbara Morgan (1900-1992)

I experimented with my phone using a video of flashing bright colours to draw with at first. Capturing movement and power in the lines that I created. This photo was originally just the arch around me upon which I added on a light strobe in the middle from another photo I had taken. The ghostly figure was powerful as it looked right at you but somehow it felt like it wasn't there.

I also used the torch on my phone and found this made a much cleaner line in the photographs. In this photo I wanted to try correcting the curvature of the arch to make it more circular in photoshop. I was proud of the editing I did but wondered how this would translate onto paper if I were to get them professionally printed. Due to the low light levels the quality of the images is a tad grainy so this will be something to focus on if I attempted this idea again.

edited the arch and made the image slightly wider

edited photo cropped to give more of a square frame
