More light painting experiments

The shorter days and longer darker periods that we are currently living through in a lockdown has been really affecting my mental health so on my birthday my photography student housemate and Maria surprised me with lots of illuminating objects that we could use to do a photoshoot and get this light painting idea started. Because of the nature of the surprise I went into this completely blind and it was freeing to just play with the lights and see what we could create.

We first did some tests indoors to figure out the best camera settings and what each luminous object would photograph like. The had brought balloons with lights in them, flashing bouncy balls, flashing yoyos, glow sticks, a multicoloured LED lamp, and our phone torches. The flashing objects created a dotted/dashed line effect which combined with the changing colours created mesmerising swirls and shapes. The glow sticks were not bright enough to be recognised when they moved but the LED light created some rich coloured lines but created a square brush mark that I wasn't sure how to combat. The balloons created a fog of colour which I really connected with and the torches on our phones created a glowing line that I experimented drawing shapes with.

I have not gone back in to edit these photos as I want to keep experimenting with the process to achieve crisper focus when including a stationary person in the image and explore more variety in the marks that I can make. I can see the influence of Francesca Woodman and Barbara Morgan in these pieces and will continue to push these ideas further in the coming semester.

Maria even had a go drawing around me with the LED Light and her style somehow still shines through the lines.
